Sharon Jones is the powerhouse front woman of the soul and funk group the Dap-Kings. The onetime Rikers Island corrections officer has spent the past 20 years releasing inspired records filled with irresistible, electric, and incredibly uplifting tracks. Jones is the subject of a new documentary by Academy Award–winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple (Miss Sharon Jones!), and her band recently released It’s a Holiday Soul Party, featuring what may be the world’s best (only?) danceable version of “White Christmas.” Sharon Van Etten is an acclaimed singer-songwriter also known for her inspired and soulful music, though no one could confuse her emotionally wrenching songs “Your Love Is Killing Me” or “I Always Fall Apart” with those of Miss Jones.
